Fruit of the Spirit Art Highlight: Faithfulness

During the summer, we’re going through a sermon series on the Fruit of the Spirit together. Each week focuses on a specific fruit — looking at the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

We’re also asking specific artists in our church to reflect, pray, and meditate on a fruit and then express their creativity through that word. The creative forms could be paintings, glasswork, pottery, music, poetry, or anything else that speaks to them.

During this week’s sermon, we talked about FAITHFULNESS as a Fruit of the Spirit. The artist, Lindsey Haglund, expressed her creativity through pottery.

So far I have come to understand faithfulness as the daily expression of obliging ourselves to God in all of our actions, out of compassion for others, especially in service of their concrete needs. It is rooted in recognizing the Divine indwelling within us that is fully present and energizes every level of our being.

As we recognize this energy as benevolent, healing, and transforming we faithfully open to its gradual unfolding, step by step in both prayer and action in daily life. In this, prayer is a constant exercise of faith, hope, and charity . . .Divine Love, and takes place in the silence of our hearts as we listen to the spirit not just with our ears or minds, but with our inmost being.

This piece represents an upward “spiral staircase," the journey of walking in faith when we cannot see the whole, but trust in the step we are taking right now. We journey as co-creators with Christ, taking one step forward at a time in faithfulness knowing the Holy Spirit is present to us and within us along the way.
